 차연(差延)

​

 2020년, 생각지도 못한 COVID19로 인해 일상적으로 당연하다는 것들이 ‘지연’되고 ‘변화’하고 있다. 우리가 당연하다게 4년마다 열린다고 생각했던 올림픽이 기약없이 연기되었고, 학생들은 학교를 가지 못하며 많은 전시 혹은 공연이 취소되고 있다.  ‘POST COVID’를 대비해야하는 우리의 모습을 비추어봤을 때, 어쩌면 목적 없이 대상으로 달려가기만 했던 과학적 태도를 경계하고 내면으로 시선을 돌려 삶의 의미를 깨닫는 자세가 필요할 때일지도 모른다.​

김영헌 작가의 'Electric Nostalgia' 연작에서는 캔버스 가득 다양하고 화려한 색의 점, 선들이 종횡(縱橫)으로 무한하게 펼쳐진다. 그는 작품을 통해 새로운 미디어가 지배하는 미술적 사조에 비판적 거리를 유지하면서 이러한 변화를 관찰하고 재해석하여 ‘미래적 노스탤지어’를 제시한다. 이렇게 탄생된 새로운 디지털 이미지는 예술이라는 개념을 근본적으로 재고하도록 만들며 작품 속 다양한 이미지들은 실재와 가상, 진품과 모사, 기술과 예술, 작품과 관람자의 경계를 무너뜨린다.

이러한 점에서 김영헌 작가가 이야기하는 ‘가상 혹은 전자세계에 대한 향수’는 정당화되어온 ‘차이’와 ‘정의내림’을 겨냥하며, 드로잉의 흔적을 통하여 순수의식 안에서 존재하는 인간 내면의 확장된 힘을 가진 ‘차연’(差延) 을 보여준다.

2020 has come, yet we are facing multiple unexpected 'deferences' and 'differences', due to COVID19. The Olympics we took for granted every four years have been indefinitely postponed, students are unable to attend school and countless exhibitions and concerts are being cancelled. Nontheless, it is heartwarming to see that despite the adversities we all face, the majority of the art community is contemplating what to do, and maintaining their ties with the community through artistical deeds. Reflecting on our status quo, having to prepare for ‘POST COVID’, it might be the time for us to raise awareness on the scientific attitude, always rushing towards a certain point without purpose. Instead, we should start delving into what is inside our hearts, and find out the meaning in life.

The 'Electric Nostalgia Series' by Young Hun Kim, shows an infinitely spreading dots and lines upon the canvas, flaunting their flamboyant hues. Through his works, the artist thrived to keep a critical distance from the aesthetics ruled by new forms of media, yet scrutinize and reinterpret the 'futuristic nostalgia'. The digital image born after such precision prompts viewers into questioning the concept of art, and breaks down the boundaries between reality and the virtual, genuine and faux, technology and arts, and finally artwork and spectator.

Keeping these points in mind, artist Young Hun Kim's concept of 'nostalgia for the digital world'  has formerly been justified under the term 'universiality', and show the 'differance' innate in people through traces of drawing.
