I+WE 展 전시 서문 

​

인간은 독립적인 존재이지만, 동시에 타인과의 관계 속에서 정체성을 형성하고 삶의 의미를 확장해 나간다. 이번 전시는 토바를 통해 ‘나’와 ‘우리’라는 개념적 축을 중심으로, 개별성과 집단성이 어떻게 상호작용하며 조화를 이루는지를 조명한다. 토바는 톱니바퀴(gear)라는 기능적 오브제에서 영감을 받아 생겨났다. 토바는 개별적인 존재들이 결합하고 상호작용할 때 조화를 이루며 하나의 흐름을 형성하고, 토바의 맞물림은 단순한 기계적 움직임을 넘어, 개인과 사회가 끊임없이 서로 영향을 주고받으며 큰 에너지를 만들어 내는 것을 보여주고자 한다. 그 관계 속에서 유대를 형성하여 함께 성장하며, 새로운 의미와 구조를 만들어 간다는 개념도 내포한다. 또한, 디지털 시대의 상징적 코드인 문자 부호들은 토바를 통해 물리적 구조로 변환되어 감정과 정체성을 시각적으로 전달하는 또 다른 언어가 되었다. 이는 현대 사회에서 감정이 언어의 장벽을 넘어 교류되는 방식과도 맥락을 같이한다.

이번 전시는 인간 존재의 양면성과 다층적인 내면을 조형적으로 구현하는 데 초점을 맞추고 있다. 토바의 앞면과 뒷면에 서로 다른 표정을 담아, 우리는 외적으로 표출되는 사회적 페르소나와 내면의 감정적 진실 사이에서 형성되는 긴장과 균형을 마주하게 된다. 이는 현대 사회 속 개인이 처한 다층적 정체성을 위트 있게 풀어내는 동시에, 내면과 외면이 공존할 수밖에 없는 인간의 본질을 환기한다. 현대인은 종종 사회적 규범에 의해 특정한 모습으로 정의되고 요구받지만, 그 이면에는 다양한 감정과 서사가 중첩되어 있다. 본 전시는 이러한 양면성을 부정적으로 바라보는 것이 아니라, 다양한 감정을 존중하고 포용하는 것이 개인과 공동체가 조화를 이루며 건강한 관계를 형성하는 데 필수적인 과정임을 강조한다. 작가는 토바를 통해 인간의 양면성을 친근감 있게 표현하며, 겉과 속이 다른 모습이 자연스러운 인간의 본질임을 인정하는 것이 중요하다고 말한다.

관람자는 단순한 조형적 경험을 넘어, 자신을 돌아보고 주변과의 관계 속에서 더 건강한 삶을 고민하는 계기가 되기를 바란다. 또한, 토바가 보여주는 시각적 리듬과 구조적 연결 속에서, 우리는 서로의 존재를 확인하고, 함께 움직이며, 분리가 아닌 공존 속에서 진정한 의미를 맞이하게 되길 소망한다.

 

Exhibition Statement

 

Humans are independent beings, yet they continuously shape their identities and expand their lives through relationships with others. This exhibition, mediated by TOBBA, explores the interplay between individuality and collectivity, focusing on the conceptual axes of "I" and "We." Inspired by the functional object of gears, TOBBA symbolizes how individual entities converge, interact, and harmonize to create a greater flow. Its interlocking mechanism transcends mere mechanical motion, revealing a dynamic exchange between individuals and society—a continuous cycle of influence that generates energy. Through these interactions, bonds are forged, growth is nurtured, and new meanings and structures emerge. Moreover, the transformation of symbolic codes, such as special characters, into tangible forms via TOBBA serves as a visual language that conveys emotions and identities, evoking the manner in which emotions transcend linguistic barriers in modern communication.

This exhibition is dedicated to sculpturally expressing the duality and multifaceted essence of human existence. By presenting distinct expressions on the front and back of TOBBA, it invites viewers to confront the tension and balance between the socially constructed persona and the emotional truths within. In doing so, the exhibition wittily captures the multilayered identity of modern individuals and reminds us of the inherent coexistence of our external and internal selves. In today’s society, people are often defined and compelled to perform roles prescribed by social norms, yet beneath these outward appearances lie intricate layers of emotion and narrative. Rather than viewing this duality negatively, the exhibition underscores the importance of embracing and respecting these diverse emotions as an essential process for individuals and communities to foster harmonious and meaningful relationships. Through TOBBA, the artist playfully expresses the innate duality of human nature, asserting that the coexistence of contrasting external and internal selves is not a contradiction but an indispensable aspect of our being.

Beyond a mere sculptural experience, this exhibition aims to encourage viewers to reflect on themselves and reexamine their relationships with others in pursuit of a more balanced and fulfilling life. Within the visual rhythm and structural connections offered by TOBBA, we are reminded of our shared existence—moving together rather than apart—and ultimately discovering true meaning in coexistence.

 

 

작가 노트

 

나는 사람들과의 교류 속에서 작품의 영감을 얻는다. 세상은 수많은 생각과 가치관이 공존하는 공간이며, 우리는 서로 영향을 주고받으며 살아간다. 나는 이러한 관계 속에서 개인과 공동체가 어떻게 연결되고 변화하는 지 '토바'라는 이미지를 통해 표현한다. 토바는 톱니바퀴 모양과 소통하는 문자 부호에서 영감을 받아 태어났다.

​

사람들은 모두 개성과 역할을 가지고 있으며, 서로 영향을 주고 받으며 살아간다. 마치 톱니바퀴가 제 역할을 하려면 맞는 톱니바퀴와 함께해야 하듯, 우리 역시 자신과 조화를 이루는 사람들과 함께할 때 비로소 본연의 역할을 할 수 있다. 때로는 나와 맞지 않는다고 느낄 수도 있지만, 결국 자신에게 맞는 자리와 관계를 찾으면 그 속에서 중요한 역할로 빛날 수도 있게 된다. 맞지 않는 톱니바퀴가 쓸모없는 것이 아니듯, 우리 모두 각자의 맞는 자리에서 필요하고 의미 있는 존재다.

많은 사람들이 ‘톱니바퀴’라는 단어에서 대체 가능하고 무미건조한 기계 속 부품을 떠올린다. 그러나 내가 바라보는 톱니바퀴는 단순한 기계의 일부가 아니다. 톱니바퀴는 에너지를 전달하는 존재이며, 새로운 움직임을 만들어내는 필수적인 요소다. 나는 작품을 통해, 우리가 각자의 속도와 위치에서 서로에게 긍정적인 에너지를 전달하며 함께 성장하는 존재임을 이야기하고 싶다.

또한, 아무리 견고한 기계라도 쉬지 않고 움직이면 마모되고 고장 나듯, 우리도 끊임없이 달리기만 하면 균형을 잃게 된다. 자동차도 주행 거리에 따라 점검을 하듯이, 인간도 쉼과 균형이 필요하다. 주 5일 일하고 주말에 쉬는 것처럼, 우리의 삶도 일과 여가, 쉼이 조화를 이루어야 한다. 나는 토바를 통해 단순한 성취와 노동뿐만 아니라, 행복한 일상과 삶의 여유도 중요하다는 메시지를 전달하고 싶다.

​

내 작업의 다른 주제는 인간의 내면, 페르소나, 자아 그리고 감정에 대한 탐구이다. 나는 작품 속에서 이러한 요소들을 철학적이거나 무겁게 다루는 것이 아니라, 위트있고 재미있는 방식으로 풀어낸다. 우리는 사회 속에서 다양한 모습을 보이며 살아가고, 내면의 감정과 외적으로 보여지는 모습 사이에는 자연스러운 차이가 존재한다. 나는 이를 시각적으로 형상화하고, 관람자가 자신의 감정을 유쾌하게 마주할 수 있도록 하는 작품을 만들고자 한다.

그리고 나의 작품은 단순히 기계적 움직임을 넘어, '소통'의 개념을 내포한다. 톱니바퀴를 주제로 이야기하지만, 동시에 문자 부호를 활용해 언어를 초월한 감정의 교류를 보여주고 있다. 전 세계 사람들은 각기 다른 언어를 사용하지만, 문자 부호 들은 누구나 감정을 직관적으로 이해할 수 있도록 한다. 나는 작품 속에서 이러한 보편적인 시각 언어를 활용하여 표현하고 있다.

 

Artist’s Note

 

I draw inspiration for my work through interactions with others. The world is a space where countless ideas and values coexist, and we continuously influence one another. In exploring these relationships, I examine how individuals and communities connect and evolve—an inquiry encapsulated in the image of TOBBA. Born from the inspiration of gear forms and the communicative essence of special characters, TOBBA emerged as an artistic expression.

​

Every individual possesses a unique character and role, continually shaped by our interactions. Just as a gear functions properly only when meshing with its appropriate counterpart, we too fulfill our potential when aligned with those who resonate with our true selves. While moments of discord may arise, finding the right connections enables us to shine in our essential roles. Just as a mismatched gear retains its inherent value, each of us remains indispensable when positioned in the proper context.

Many associate the term “gear” with a generic mechanical component, yet I see it as far more than that—a conduit of energy and a vital element that initiates new movement. Through my work, I wish to convey that, in our own unique ways, we have the capacity to transmit positive energy to one another and foster mutual growth.

Moreover, just as even the sturdiest machine wears down if it never rests, we too risk losing our balance if we constantly push forward. As a car requires routine maintenance, humans need rest and equilibrium. Just as a five-day workweek is balanced by a weekend of respite, our lives must harmonize work with leisure and rest. Through TOBBA, I aim to communicate that beyond mere achievement and labor, a joyful daily life and a sense of well-being are essential.

​

Another central theme of my work is the exploration of the human interior—our persona, our self, and our emotions. I approach these subjects not with somber gravity but with wit and playfulness. We lead multifaceted lives, and there exists a natural distinction between our inner emotions and the outward images we present. I endeavor to visually express this duality, inviting viewers to engage with their feelings in an uplifting manner.

​

Furthermore, my work transcends mechanical motion to embody the essence of communication. While the motif of gears is central, I also incorporate special characters to illustrate an exchange of emotions that goes beyond language. Although people around the world speak different tongues, these characters form a universal visual language, allowing anyone to intuitively grasp the emotions conveyed. Through TOBBA, I seek to evoke a deep resonance that transcends words.

 

신작 토바는....

 

이번 전시에서 새롭게 선보이는 신작 토바는 기존 작품보다 한층 더 성숙한 모습을 담아냈다. 40cm 크기의 스테인레스 스틸 소재로 제작된 이번 작품은 작은 크기지만 무게감 있는 존재로, 어디서든 함께할 수 있는 형태로 표현되었다. 기존 전시에서 선보였던 1m의 FRP 작품들과 동일한 5가지 표정을 유지하면서도, 더욱 내구성이 뛰어난 스테인레스 스틸을 사용하여 토바의 단단하고 성숙한 정신적 내면을 반영하고자 했다.

​

기존 작품이 토바의 따뜻하고 다양한 감정을 표현하는 데 집중했다면, 신작에서는 단단하고 주체적인 내면을 재료를 통해 보여주고자 했다. 차갑고 견고한 스테인레스 스틸은 토바의 강인한 정신과 내면을, 컬러풀한 외부의 감정 표현은 따뜻한 마음을 상징하며, 외유내강(外柔內剛)의 모습을 담아냈다. 작은 크기이지만 그 안에 담긴 에너지와 깊이는 더욱 커졌으며, 한 점 한 점 수많은 제작 공정을 거쳐 높은 완성도를 추구했다.

​

또한, 이번 전시에서는 새로운 테이블 형태의 조형물도 함께 선보인다. 스테인레스 스틸로 톱니바퀴 형상의 디자인을 강조하여, 조형적인 아름다움과 기능을 동시에 갖춘 존재감 있는 작품이다. 이 작품도 토바의 철학과 구조적 미학을 반영하여, 기능적이면서도 예술적인 오브제로서 공간에 의미를 더한다.

​

토바는 전시를 거듭하며 더욱 성장하고 변화하고 있다. 이번 신작을 통해, 기존의 감성적인 접근을 넘어 보다 성숙한 자아와 내면의 강인함을 조형적으로 표현하는 새로운 토바의 모습을 보여주고자 한다.

 

New Work: TOBBA

 

In this exhibition, the newly unveiled work, TOBBA, embodies a more mature expression compared to its earlier iterations. Crafted from stainless steel and measuring 40cm, this compact piece exudes a powerful presence and is designed to harmonize with any environment. While it retains the same five expressions as the previously exhibited 1m FRP works, the use of more durable stainless steel reflects TOBBA’s robust and refined inner character.

​

Whereas earlier works focused on conveying warmth and a spectrum of emotions, this new piece seeks to reveal a solid and confident interior through its material qualities. The cold, steadfast stainless steel symbolizes TOBBA’s resilient core, while its colorful exterior expresses a warm heart—capturing the essence of being "soft on the outside, strong on the inside." Despite its smaller size, the energy and depth contained within have been significantly amplified, with every detail meticulously crafted to achieve exceptional quality.

​

Additionally, this exhibition introduces a new table-shaped sculpture. Emphasizing a gear-like design rendered in stainless steel, this striking work seamlessly fuses aesthetic beauty with functionality. Reflecting TOBBA’s underlying philosophy and structural elegance, it enriches the space as both a functional object and a work of art.

​

With each successive exhibition, TOBBA continues to grow and evolve. Through this new work, I aim to present a fresh facet of TOBBA—one that transcends its earlier emotional approach to express a more mature self and inner strength in sculptural form.
